From the Pursuit of the Length of Life, to the Exploration of the Inner Pursuit of the Splendor of Life - Peng Mingtong, woodcarving and batik artist

 

 

騎行在池上蜿蜒的197線道,眺著一望無際的稻田風景,在4.5公里處有一間充滿綠意的小店,往裡面一走,裡面布滿了各式的藝術品。這裡是4.5公里咖啡,也是木雕、蠟染藝術家彭明通的藝術創作工作室。

 

Cycling on the winding county road 197 on Chishang , overlooking the endless scenery of rice fields, there is a small shop full of greenery at 4.5 kilometers. Walking inside, it is full of various works of art. This is 4.5 Kilometers Cafe, and it is also the artistic creation studio of Peng Mingtong, a woodcarving and batik artist.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

今年(2022)是彭明通返鄉設立4.5公里咖啡工作室,作為縣道上第一家咖啡店,從當初的不被看好,到現在已邁入第16個年頭。曾經的彭大哥是運動員、政戰畢業的輔導長,也是邁向國際的服裝公司老闆及藝術家,但病痛之後,彭大哥回到了老家池上,整頓修養回歸創作。

 

This year (2022), Peng Mingtong returned to his hometown to set up the 4.5 Kilometers Cafe studio. As the first coffee shop on the county road, it has entered its 16th year since it was doubted at the beginning. The former big brother Peng was an athlete, a counselor who graduated from political warfare, and an owner of a clothing company and an artist going international. But after the illness, big brother Peng returned to his hometown of Chishang, rehabilitated and returned to creation.

 

 

 

 

初回台東,彭明通的蠟染作品以「回」字為主,專注於回家的回的那一刻。

「以前的作品比較複雜,可能是作畫作、人物像,回來後能也是因為環境的關係跟這個地方的感覺吧,最開始只是用單字用那個回家的那個回古字做創作。漸漸地在裡面看到了平衡、對應,一邊畫的粗了一點;另一邊就畫的細長一些。」面對外貿公司的商場廝殺,彭明通開始重新思索賠了健康,人生究竟為了什麼?除了追求金錢,發現追求生命的長度才是當下所需要的,回到台東池上,重新找回生活的平衡。

 

When returning to Taitung for the first time, Peng Mingtong's batik works mainly focus on the character "回", focusing on the moment of returning home.

"The previous works were more complicated, maybe they were paintings and portraits. After I came back, it might be because of the relationship between the environment and the feeling of this place. At first, I only used single character to create works with the "回" ancient character. Gradually I can see the balance and correspondence in it, one side is thicker and the other side is thinner. " Faced with the fighting in the shopping malls of foreign trade companies, Peng Mingtong began to rethink his health claims. What is life for? In addition to the pursuit of money, I found that the pursuit of the length of life is what we need now. I returned to Taitung Chishang and regained the balance of life.

 

 

 

 

 

除了創作,彭明通也經營咖啡廳成為接待好友的場域,一句「你現在創作以平面為主,當你以後做想要做立體的時候,你會發現…體力可能已經沒有辦法了。」來自亦師亦友的醍醐灌頂,彭明通於七八年前踏入了木雕的世界。

 

In addition to creating, Peng Mingtong also runs a coffee shop as a venue for entertaining friends. He said, "Your creation is mainly flat now. When you want to do three-dimensional in the future, you will find that ... you are no capable to do it." Reminded by his friends and mentors, Peng Mingtong stepped into the world of woodcarving seven or eight years ago.

 

 

 

 

 

「但後面幾年呢?我發現追求的不是生命的長度,而是生活裡面的精采度。」

 

"But what about the next few years? I found that the pursuit of life is not the length of life, but the splendor of life."

 

 

說著說著彭明通指向了後方的木雕作品,這個半身人像的作品,後腦杓挖了一個空。腦中的思緒,象徵著我們生活裡面所給予二元思維,對錯、上下、好與壞?其實都有一對立的狀態,在對立的狀態裡面,就是我們的頭腦在思考。反思,我們如何用心生活?「其實有一段時間,我都一直在用頭腦生活,很少用心。我回到這裡以後我才知道啊,應該是用心生活。」

 

As he spoke, Peng Mingtong pointed to the woodcarving work at the back, the work of the bust, with a scoop in the back of the head dug out. The thoughts in the brain symbolize the duality of thinking given in our lives, right and wrong, up and down, good and bad? In fact, there is an opposite state, and in the opposite state, our minds are thinking. Reflect, how do we live with our hearts? "Actually, for a period of time, I have been living with my head and rarely with my heart. I didn't know until I came back here that I realized that I should be living with my heart."

 

 

 

 

回到鄉間生活,觀察日月更迭、農村景色的變換,彭明通感嘆農村的美學其實藏在生活中。「其實最早的回字,應該是陰陽太極的那個圖案,然後衍生出來的現在的回字。他叫生生不息,連綿不斷。像日夜、四季、農作一輪又過一輪,各按其時。」

 

Returning to life in the countryside, observing the changes of the sun and the moon and the changing scenery of the countryside, Peng Mingtong lamented that the aesthetics of the countryside is actually hidden in life. "Actually, the earliest character “回” should be the pattern of Yin-Yang Tai-ji, and then the current “回” derived from it. It is called endless, continuous. Like day and night, four seasons, and farming round after round, each according to the time."

 

 

日與夜的輪迴,落葉歸根形成樹與葉的生命循環,看似日復一日的重複但形成了不一樣的生命個體。「你有看過同樣的一顆石頭嗎?你有看過同樣的一片葉子嗎?他只有雷同,沒有一樣。」透過日常的觀察,彭明通思索著自己、空間與宇宙的連結,探究人生活的根本。

 

Alternation of day and night, fallen leaves return to their roots to form a life cycle of trees and leaves, which seems to repeat day after day but form different life individuals. "Have you ever seen the same stone? Have you ever seen the same leaf? There are only similarities, not the same." Through daily observation, Peng Mingtong pondered the connection between himself, space and the universe, and explored the fundamentals of human life.

 

 

「其實…我們每個人都是一個創作者,你不是一直在創造你自己的生命啊?探索內在的創作好像是自然而然的現象,是不用特別去追求的。每個生命會長出自己的樣子。」

 

"Actually... each of us is a creator, aren't you always creating your own life? Exploring the inner creation seems to be natural, and there is no need to pursue it. Every life will grow into its own shape."
