Taitung, the Fortune Beautiful Land Where I Started My Artist Career

Angus Kuo

My destiny with Taitung started in 2016 due to my first long stay in eastern Taiwan for the filming of a TV drama. Before that, my impressions of Taitung remained in a short stay during my graduation trip when I was a kid and I didn't get much of an impression of that. But during 2016, it was a very important life experience for me as a long-time resident of Taipei. In particular, we were hit by a very heavy typhoon when we just arrived in Taitung. It was almost impossible to live or work normally for several days. It was after a week or so that all things settled down. However, this disaster gave me a special thought that If this happened in northern Taiwan, it would be very serious. But in Taitung, it is like nature doing a routine purification for this simple city, and there is a sense of graceful hope that everything will be reborn again. I think this is a rich nutrient for art practitioners.

We went everywhere during the vacation in Taitung, including Tiehua Music Village where young creators are very cherished, the flourishing Chishang with no blind spots for photos, Luye Highlands full of hot air balloons, the beautiful Jialulan, I see u Brown Boulevard, Chu Lu Ranch, etc. It is very convenient to travel anywhere on a long map. And we can see fireflies anywhere without light pollution. I felt like I was back in my mother's arms reading a storybook when I was a little boy. I was happy to feel like being back there, but this time I was in the arms of nature, and I realized this was my real home. Taitung is the fortune beautiful land where I started my artistic career.

I met a lot of local friends during these few months, and, of course, visited many local artists too. I was most impressed by the encounter with the founders of Ripplemaker Foundation, Mr. Zhu Ping and Ms. Chen Yu Ming. After a long drive, we finally arrived at their place in Taitung. The building and the sea merged together, like a canoe gliding along, very relaxing and romantic. I viewed over the Pacific Ocean, took out my sketching tools excitedly, and start drawing immediately. I really enjoyed the sense of immediacy while drawing, just like dancing with the sea. During the sunset, we went stargazing on a balcony. If we had a controller for our lives, we would like to press the pause button for that moment. I wish today, tomorrow, and every day could be like this.

In the following year, I was invited by the Taitung Art Museum to join an Artist-in-residence program. I planned a 15) sized large canvas with scenes between Taitung's downtown area to the other side of the city. After making the draft, I created the work with the museum visitors on site. I want to use this opportunity to discuss "the invisible distance with painting after growing up" at the art museum. I spent a month and a half there every day watching people feeling self-doubting and anxious at the moment they colored the canvas. In my free time, I also observed and sketched every corner of Taitung. After the program, I hurriedly moved the work to the scene with a truck and took a photo. I was surprised to find that the previous composition and content appeared on sight unexpectedly. We were unable to explain this peculiar phenomenon. This is a precious gift I gave myself in Taitung.

Although I have hosted a lot of exterior shots about delicious food in the past, I still prefer to be a couch potato most of the time. The beautiful memories in Taitung are the only one that often comes through my mind. Taitung gave me visions and feelings which are completely different from those of a big city. I think it is a good place where everyone can let go of the complicated life and relax their souls.
